Australia Outback Farm Fencing: Wildlife Exclusion Solution (5×7cm Diamond Mesh)

17 Jun 2026

Target countries: Australia, New Zealand
Industry: Livestock / Agriculture / Pasture Management
Farmers across the Australian outback and New Zealand face a constant battle against native wildlife – kangaroos, wild dogs, feral pigs, and emus – that damage pastures, injure livestock, and breach biosecurity. Standard farm fencing with large openings (>15cm) fails to stop adult kangaroos, while extreme summer heat causes ordinary fences to warp and crack. Our custom 5×7cm diamond mesh fence solves all three problems in one integrated design.

Product close-up: 5×7cm diamond mesh. Note: an adult finger can pass through – this is by design. The diamond shape prevents toe grip and blocks kangaroo bodies.
What Problem Does This Fencing Solve?
1. Kangaroo & Wild Dog Intrusion
The issue: Adult kangaroos can easily pass through conventional ranch fencing with 15cm+ mesh openings. Wild dogs dig under or squeeze through large gaps, leading to livestock attacks and pasture destruction.
Our solution: The 5×7cm diamond mesh has openings approximately one-third the size of standard farm fence openings. An adult kangaroo's head and torso exceed 7cm, so they cannot squeeze through. The diamond shape also provides no horizontal rung for toe gripping, making climbing extremely difficult. (Note: a human finger can pass through the 5×7cm opening – this does not compromise the anti-climb performance, as climbing requires toe placement.)
Result: Effective wildlife exclusion without blocking visibility or ventilation.

2. Extreme Heat & Thermal Expansion
The issue: Australian inland summer temperatures frequently exceed 40°C, and ground surface can reach 60-70°C. Ordinary fences expand, contract, and develop cracked welds or deformed mesh within a few seasons.
Our solution: We use 1.2mm thick hot-dipped galvanized steel posts (versus standard 0.8-1.0mm). The mesh is available with hot-dip galvanizing + UV-stabilized PVC coating that reflects solar radiation and resists peeling. Welded + bolted connections allow controlled thermal movement, preventing stress fractures.
Result: Fencing that remains straight and functional even after multiple Australian summers.
3. Wildlife Entanglement (Kangaroos & Emus)
The issue: Sharp barbed wire or spiked top rails on standard fences often trap and injure kangaroos and emus, causing slow deaths or expensive rescue operations.
Our solution: The fence top uses smooth square tube capping – no barbs, no spikes, no sharp edges. This design follows the “wildlife-friendly fencing” guidelines recommended by Australian wildlife protection agencies (e.g., RSPCA Australia).
Result: Safe for native animals while still maintaining an effective barrier.

Important note about 5×7cm mesh opening
Adult fingers can pass through a 5×7cm diamond mesh – this is intentional. The anti-climb property comes from the diamond shape, which prevents toes from finding a horizontal rung to push off. Adult kangaroos and wild dogs cannot squeeze their body through a 7cm opening. For applications requiring finger-proof security (e.g., detention centers, high-security prisons), we recommend smaller mesh sizes such as 1×2cm or 2×3cm welded mesh. Contact us for recommendations based on your specific threat model.
Why This Fencing Works for Australian Conditions
The 5×7cm diamond mesh is not just smaller – its geometry is inherently anti-climb. Unlike square or rectangular mesh, the diamond pattern lacks horizontal rungs that a kangaroo or dog could use to pull themselves through. Combined with a 2.4m height and smooth top, it creates a psychological and physical barrier that native wildlife quickly learn to avoid.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Will a 2.1m fence stop all kangaroos?
Most adult kangaroos cannot clear 2.1m from a standing start, but stressed or chased kangaroos may jump higher. For 99% exclusion, we recommend 2.4m. For smaller wallabies, 1.8m may suffice.
How long does the UV-resistant coating last in Australian sun?
Our PVC coating is tested to withstand 10+ years of direct Australian UV exposure without cracking or color fading. Hot-dip galvanizing underneath adds another 20+ years of corrosion protection.
Can this fence be electrified?
Yes. We can add insulated stand-offs for electric wires, or you can run a separate electric strand along the top or middle.
Does the 5×7cm mesh allow small beneficial animals through?
Yes – rabbits, bandicoots, and other small native animals can pass through the 5×7cm opening. For farmers who want to exclude all wildlife, we offer smaller mesh sizes (e.g., 1×2cm). Contact us to discuss your ecological goals.
